Bicycle master plan
To respond to the growing popularity of cycling in the region and promote sustainable mobility, the MRC of Brome-Missisquoi, in collaboration with the CLD, commissioned Vélo Québec to develop a regional Bicycle Master Plan.
Project phases

What is a Bicycle master plan?
A Bicycle master plan is a planning tool designed to guide the development of cycling in a given territory. It helps define a long-term vision and plan concrete actions to improve bicycle transportation, whether for commuting to work or school, or simply for leisure.
This type of plan supports municipalities and partners in structuring a safe, coherent, and accessible cycling network, taking into account the needs of citizens, local realities, and best practices. It may include, for example:
- The creation or improvement of bike lanes
- Connections between municipalities
- Measures to encourage cycling
- Clear governance to coordinate efforts
In short, a Bicycle Master Plan is a collective roadmap to make cycling a safer, easier, and more enjoyable mode of transportation in the region.
A bicycle master plan for a structuring cycling network
The MRC of Brome-Missisquoi is committed to advancing sustainable mobility by developing an ambitious Bicycle Master Plan. This strategic plan aims to guide collective actions over the coming years to develop and strengthen a functional, safe, and attractive regional cycling network.
Designed to meet the needs of everyday cyclists as well as outdoor enthusiasts, the plan supports both utilitarian cycling (daily commuting) and recreational-tourism cycling (leisure and tourism).
A concrete action plan structured around four main priorities
The action plan resulting from this process proposes 11 priority initiatives organized under four key themes:
- Enhancing the comfort and functionality of cycling paths
- Creating strong cycling connections between municipalities and key hubs
- Developing a genuine cycling culture throughout the territory
- Establishing effective governance to ensure the plan’s implementation
A lever for regional sustainable development
This Bicycle Master Plan also aligns with a long-term vision, actively contributing to the achievement of several objectives in the Brome-Missisquoi Strategic Sustainable Development Plan 2024–2034, notably initiatives 1.1.3, 2.3.4, 2.4.2, and 3.3.2.
Vision 2035
The widespread availability of safe and user-friendly roads, the abundance of recreational cycling routes, the scenic and cultural attractions, and the strong connectivity between municipalities are gradually making Brome-Missisquoi a region where cycling is becoming a major mode of transportation—one that actively contributes to the region’s socio-economic development.
