  • Bike in the direction of traffic.
  • Stay to the far right of the road.
  • Always be visible.
  • Follow all traffic signs and signals.

Rules for cars

  • When passing cyclists, keep your car a safe distance away from their bike.
  • When it’s safe to do so, the Highway Safety Code allows crossing a solid line to pass a cyclist.
  • Allow bikes to pass other bikes—it’s their right.
  • Avoid distractions.
  • Be calm, patient and polite.

Rules for heavy vehicles

  • Slow down when approaching a cyclist.
  • Keep track of and anticipate a cyclist’s movements.
  • When passing a cyclist, keep your vehicle a safe distance away from their bike. The Highway Safety Code allows crossing a solid line to pass a cyclist when it’s safe to do so.
  • Watch out! Heavy vehicles have multiple blind spots due to their size, specifically their height, which prevents drivers from seeing cars, pedestrians and cyclists clearly.
