Gender equality

Quebec and Canada strive to ensure that men and women are equal. Women in our society have the same rights as men.

Governments have established measures to ensure men and women are paid equally. A woman with as many years of experience and similar training to a man should earn the same salary for the same position.

The Family Allowance is paid out to women

In Quebec, the Family Allowance (money to support children under 18) is usually paid out to the mother of the family, except in the following cases:

  • The parents are separated and the father has full custody, in which case the father receives the family allowance.
  • The parents have joint custody, in which case the allowance is shared between both parents.

The government distributes the allowance to women to help ensure their financial independence.
