Elementary and high school

There are two phases of mandatory schooling: elementary and high school. Children attend elementary school from kindergarten until grade 6. After grade 6, children go to high school for five years.

In Quebec, the first year of high school is called Secondary 1 and not grade 7. The same goes for the following years (Secondary 2, 3, 4 and 5).

There are fewer high schools than elementary schools in the area, as the high schools are larger. The two largest high schools in Brome-Missisquoi are Jean-Jacques-Bertrand in Farnham and Massey-Vanier in Cowansville.

When your child is in high school, they can leave the school grounds at lunchtime if they receive written permission from you to do so at the start of the year.
