Driver’s licence (SAAQ)

Back to Portal - Home and immigration

SAAQ

The Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) is the only official institution that can issue or replace driver’s licences. You cannot drive in Quebec or Canada if you do not have a driver’s licence.

Driver’s licence

Drivers with licences issued outside of Quebec can continue to drive with this licence for the first six months after they arrive. After this point, they must go to the SAAQ and get a Quebec driver’s licence.

You can make an appointment online through the SAAQ website. SERY (Solidarité ethnique régionale de la Yamaska) can also help you with this process (see the Contact person section below).

Get your first Quebec licence

You can start the process of getting your licence in Quebec at 16 years old. This is when you can sign up for driving lessons.

Getting a driver’s licence takes at least one year.

  • First, you will need to take theory courses with the driving school of your choice.
  • Once you have passed the knowledge test, you will receive your temporary licence, which allows you to drive a car when accompanied by a more experienced driver who already has their licence.
  • After you finish your theory courses and practical driving lessons, you must pass the SAAQ road test.
  • Once you pass your road test, you will finally receive your driver’s licence.
